Job Description:
Patient Care: Provides comprehensive ophthalmic nursing care, including patient assessment, monitoring, and treatment.
Surgical Assistance: Assists ophthalmologists during eye surgery, preparing patients and instruments.
Medication Administration: Administers eye drops and other medications, ensuring proper dosage and administration techniques.
Vision Testing: Conducts various vision tests, such as visual acuity and field tests, to evaluate eye health.
Patient Education: Educates patients and their families about eye conditions, treatments, and home care instructions.
Record Keeping: Maintains accurate patient records, documenting assessments, treatments, and progress.
Communication: Communicates effectively with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals, ensuring clear and accurate information.
Procedures: Assists with procedures such as laser treatments, injections, and other outpatient surgeries.
Safety: Ensures a safe and sterile environment for patients and procedures.
Requirements:
Education: Registered Nurse (RN) license and a nursing degree or diploma.
Specialized Knowledge: A thorough understanding of ophthalmic anatomy, physiology, and common eye diseases.
Clinical Skills: Expertise in performing ophthalmic procedures and administering medications.
Communication Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients and colleagues.
Critical Thinking: Ability to assess patient needs, prioritize care, and make sound clinical judgments.
Compassion and Empathy: A compassionate and patient-centered approach, particularly when working with patients experiencing visual impairment or eye conditions.
Leadership and Teamwork: May be expected to lead nursing teams and collaborate with other healthcare professionals.
In addition to the above, Certification in ophthalmic nursing (e.g., Ophthalmic Nursing Certification) may enhance job prospects.
Prior experience in ophthalmic nursing or related fields may be preferred.
Experience with specific technologies or procedures used in ophthalmic settings (e.g., OCT, laser treatments) may be valuable.
